The network of UNESCO project schools in Germany consists of around 300 schools - out of a total of 32,000 schools in Germany, this is an exclusive group to which the Neue Schule Dorsten belongs. Worldwide, there are 12,000 UNESCO Associated Schools in over 180 countries. What all schools have in common is that they pursue the goals and values of UNESCO and are committed to peace, openness to the world and education for sustainable development. Through their educational work, the schools contribute to the realisation of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Education, in particular the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Since the school was newly founded in the 2018/19 school year, we have been working every day to shape our school profile with our practical educational work in such a way that the basis of our thoughts and actions in line with the goals and values of UNESCO is clearly recognisable. Through our educational work, we send the children off into their and therefore our future with a high sense of responsibility.
We are committed to upholding these principles in every respect and not only making our students aware of them, but also encouraging them to actively put them into practice.
The journey to becoming a UNESCO school takes place over three stages. We are currently in the middle of this journey and have achieved the status of a "UNESCO Associated Project School".
Achieving this status is the result of the commitment of a dedicated school community of teachers, pupils and parents who are constantly enriching the UNESCO work of the Neue Schule Dorsten with new projects and activities that are permanently anchored in the school profile:
The UNESCO Inclusion Day in Year 5; the UNESCO working groups; visits to UNESCO camps and nationwide project days; the UNESCO project week; school cycling; the UNESCO Peace Project Day, which raised €1,400 this year; the hiking day to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein; the class trips in Year 6 to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea; participation in the Basic Law Week in Dorsten; the deposit bottle campaign for charitable purposes; the Amnesty International letter marathon; the production and sale of pendants for the victims of environmental disasters, in cooperation with Aktion Deutschland Hilft, ...
Through projects like these, which characterise our educational work, we make the values and goals of UNESCO tangible for our pupils. It is important to us that the pupils can act as multipliers of these values at the end of their time at school and find their place in the world as courageous, responsible citizens.
Neue Schule Dorsten leads to all lower secondary school-leaving qualifications and ensures access to the gymnasiale Oberstufe (upper secondary school) through binding cooperation.
All children are supported in such a way that they achieve the best educational qualification for them after Year 10.
